I don't know how to describe our next guest but he once threatened to swim
a 4-way across the English Channel

 Name-Paul Beukelman

 Age-47

 Resides-Essendon

Swimming Highlights-English Channel in 2001, Rottnest in 2001 and 2002

Biggest influence and current training – Leading up to the channel I enjoyed training with Jon in Dick Campion's squad. I went from a 3km/hour pace to a 4.2km/hour pace and lost about 20kg, all in 12 months. Since the channel I have been swimming less. When I do go its with Butch at Melbourne Grammar.

Swimming Idol- Captain Webb for being the first channel swimmer. Des Renford for being tough and starting channel swimming at the age of 40. Currently it is Grant Hackett. Looking forward to seeing the 1500m and the 10km open water swim in the olympics.

Pool or Ocean- Used to be a keen ocean swimmer. Currently don't live near the ocean so having to settle for the pool.

How many kms a week- Was doing 40km per week leading up to the channel. Currently only doing about 5km per week.

Longest swim and how many hours in the water- English Channel in 2001....11 hours and 9 minues. Funny I don't remember the 11 hours but sure remember the 9 minutes....

Favorite swim- Probably Rotto...clear water and a few ales at the end....

Coldest place you have swam and temp- the bay in winter 6C, you need to keep swimming to keep warm........

Roughest swim eg. Wave height and wind speed- 6am in middle of winter in the bay, with Jon and Sommer McMaster in July 2001...waves were pounding in, it was pitch black!!

Swimming goals- been thinking about a double channel crossing...probably its a few years off now....

What or who motivates you- Chasing Alby in a swim race and tapping him on the toes to annoy him!!

How much is Physical% Mental%, initial swim pace is physical, the desire to go on and finish what you started in mental. In a long swim its probably 20% physical /80% mental.

Favorite saying- To quote Mike Oram: You need to plan your next venture (the goal after you have swum the Channel) before your attempt. (A lot of successful swimmers go into depression after they walk up the beach in France).

Biggest fear swimming eg..cold jellyfish, sharks etc.. Alby getting to the finish line before me

Swimming close calls- None that come to mind.......

Tips for other swimmers – Have a balanced life style.......don't be overly foccussed on any single goal......

What would you eat and drink during a swim- I found maxim excellent during long swims

Worst place you have swam- Doing 25km in Hazelwood Pondage with its metallic water taste was hard to enjoy.....

Worst injuries- Swimmers shoulder...took about 6 months to get over...

Favorite food, drink, music ,movie and holiday destination- Pasta, red wine, Cold Play, Koh Samui

What do you think of when you are in the water for hours- Finishing strongly....

Where is one place you haven’t or would like to swim- Fiji, Hawaii and Manhattan Island are all interesting swims

3 people you would invite to dinner- Be fun to have a big dinner party with my family and close friends

Cold water tips- Keep the heart rate up to keep warm......

Toughest competitor- Can never get near Jon in a swim race!! (Jon Hayward)

Diet and how much is weight a factor on long distance swims- Putting on weight, I found was a curse...easy to put on...hard to get off....it might be of some assistance to keep warm in cold water....but training up to handle the cold water seems just as effective.......

Pet hate-don't have one...

Biggest thrill- I enjoyed bunge jumping and sky diving

Favorite sport besides swimming- Cycling and kayaking

Who would you like to sit next to on a plane-Would be good to chat with Nelson Mandela....

Car you drive-Had a SS Commodore for 8 years....

Next swimming challenge- Maybe the Bloody Big Swim in Feb

Occupation- Consulting Engineer

D.O.B. 3/12/1960
